Aero Contractors Airlines suspends scheduled services in Nigeria

Coach Rohr Resumes Role As 20 Eagles Train In Uyo

Franco-German Gernot Rohr has resumed as the coach of Nigeria’s senior football team, Super Eagles, as the team begin training sessions ahead of Saturday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania.

Rohr and a number of players landed in Uyo on Tuesday, a day after their flight was cancelled by ARIK airline.

On arrival at the team’s Le Meridien Hotel, Coach Rohr had a meeting with his assistants, backroom staff and players present, before the evening’s training session at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

Gabon Presidential Election: Ping Asks Bongo To Acknowledge Defeat

Gabon opposition candidate Jean Ping has called on President Ali Bongo on Monday to “acknowledge his defeat” in Saturday’s presidential election.

After publishing numbers on Sunday that showed him comfortably in the lead based on a small percentage of votes, Ping called on Bongo to step down.

“I encourage Ali Bongo to submit to the verdict of the ballot box,” he told a news conference, without providing more voting figures.

ANC Loses Power In Johannesburg For First Time In 22 Years

For the first time in 22 years, South Africa’s governing party, African National Congress (ANC), has lost control of the country’s largest city and economic centre, Johannesburg.

This comes after the city council elected as Mayor, Herman Mashaba From the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA).

The ANC had run the city since the fall of apartheid in 1994 but it lost its council majority in local elections, although it is still the largest party.

Earthquake Leaves At Least 21 Dead In Central Italy

At least 21 people including children have died in Central Italy after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck 76 kilometre, Southeast of the city of Perugia.

In Rome, reports say some buildings shook for 20 seconds and a family of four were found under rubble in the town of Accumoli. Several people remain trapped under the rubble.

Italy Grieves As State Funeral Held For Victims Of Powerful Quake

Weeping relatives hugged each other and reached out to touch the simple wooden coffins at a state funeral held on Saturday for some of the 290 people killed in an earthquake this week.

Amongst the 35 coffins laid out in a sports hall were small caskets holding the bodies of an 18-month-old baby and a nine-year-old girl, two of the 21 children who are known to have died when the quake hit central Italy early on Wednesday.
